The Alchemist's Journal · Captions

Every network gets its own caption now

X has 280 characters. LinkedIn has 3,000. Instagram caps you at 5 hashtags. The Alchemist now writes a fitted caption for each one, with the right length and the right tags.

Until now, every network got the same caption. That meant your X post was either trimmed mid-sentence or your LinkedIn post was two lines in a sea of white space. Neither is a good look. That's fixed.

One post, many versions

When the Alchemist writes a caption, it now creates a version for every account your brand posts to. Each version respects that network's character limit: 280 on X Free, 2,200 on Instagram and TikTok, 3,000 on LinkedIn, 5,000 on Facebook. If a caption is too long, it trims intelligently — dropping hashtags first, then shortening from the end at sentence boundaries, never cutting a thought in half.

Links are handled differently too. Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest don't make links tappable in captions, so those versions leave the link out and the app reminds you where to put it instead (bio, comment, or story). X, LinkedIn and Facebook get the link inline.

Hashtags that match the network

Instagram and TikTok get their own hashtag sets, picked for those platforms. Other networks get the general set, trimmed to a count that works there: 2 tags on X (where space is tight), 3 on LinkedIn and Facebook, 5 on Instagram and TikTok. The tags are ordered strongest first, so if a network only shows the first two or three, those are the best ones.

Behind the scenes, the Alchemist now checks every proposed hashtag against Wikipedia page-view data. A tag about a named topic — a book, an event, a city — is checked for real interest: rising views means the topic is trending and the tag ranks higher; under 30 views a day means nobody is looking and the tag is dropped. Giant catch-all tags like #love, #fyp and #viral are never used. Tags the AI invented by gluing words together, like #ReadingSpeedVisuals, are dropped unless your brand actually uses that phrase.

From the workshop

Instagram announced a 5-hashtag cap in December 2025. The Alchemist enforces it in code, so you never have to count.

Your X plan matters

X Free accounts have a 280-character limit. X Premium accounts get 25,000. In Brand settings, under "Where this brand posts," there's now an X plan toggle. Set it once and every caption the Alchemist writes for X will fit your actual limit.

Saved captions stay yours

If you edit a caption for one network — maybe you want a different hook on LinkedIn — that saved version always wins. The Alchemist won't overwrite it. If you redo the whole post or sharpen the caption, the saved versions clear so the new text flows through to every account.

Copy and go

The "Captions for each account" panel shows every version side by side, with a live character counter that turns red when you're over. Each one has a "Copy & open" button that copies the fitted caption and opens that network, ready to paste.
